WHAT IS LED?

LED is a semiconductor diode (P-N junction) emitting visible light whenever receiving electric power (photons). It is a Light Emitting Diode, the name of which is based on the English abbreviation.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF LED AS COMPARED WITH THE CONVENTIONAL LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES?
  • Power saving
    The lighting costs can be reduced by up to 70%, depending on the implemented solutions, increasing at the same time the light quality, due to its efficiency. Despite the higher acquisition costs, if compared with other kinds of light bulbs, the general result is frankly positive, if we consider not only the saving of the lighting costs, but also the useful life span of the LED .
  • Life span
    The LED have an average useful life span of 50 thousand hours, also in view of the fact that the switching on and off does not interfere with their durability. A daily use for eight hours may lead to a life span of 17 years. Let’s compare it with the maximum life span of a conventional fluorescent light bulb, which equals 10 thousand hours, being however substantially reduced when switched on and off.
  • Light flux
    LED provide the maximal instantaneous lighting, without any power highs when switched on. Their brightness does not practically change with their use, as opposed to a fluorescent light bulb which could lose 84% of its light flux after being used for 2 thousand hours.
  • They don’t generate heat
    As they don’t emit infrared radiation, they don’t produce heat, that is, the LED lighted surface maintains its room temperature. This is a huge advantage namely in heat sensitive areas, such as the lighting of food or cosmetics.
  • LED further the environment
    Due to their low consumption, the LED reduce considerably the CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. They do not contain substances which damage the environment, such as mercury or lead.
  • They do not emit UV or infrared radiation
    With the exception of LED all known light sources (incandescent light bulbs, as well as halogen, sodium vapor, metal iodides, and mercury vapor light bulbs as well as the sun light) emit this kind of radiation.
  • There is no risk with direct contacts

WHAT IS THE COLOR TEMPERATURE?

The Color Temperature designates the color of the light, that is, when we speak of a warm or a cold light, we mean the color tone the light provides to its environment. The measuring unit of the color temperature is the Kelvin degree (ºK). The higher the color temperature, the bluer (colder) is the light and, conversely, the lower the color temperature, the yellower (warmer) it is.
